If there is one thing I can absolutely say I support President Obama on… its his commitment to technology. I think electronic medical records are a great idea even if they do not provide any cost savings (as recent studies suggest). I think non-gasoline based cars are a great idea, even if they cost a little more. And I think his support of better electronic/data infrastructure is long overdue. I mean, the guy had a brand new Blackberry-type device created for him cause he couldn’t kick his habit, even in Presidential Rehab.
Well, he is running an Educate to Innovate campaign which will spend time, money, and volunteers to encourage younger students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math. To drive the program, he is also creating incentives for winners of national invention competitions, such as a trip to the White House, “If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House. Well, if you’re a young person and you’ve produced the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.”
When presenting the campaign, he even had time to crack a little joke…
Now lest one think I having joined President Obama’s sinking bandwagon of overall support, I did think some of his reasoning was suspect, “You know the success we seek is not going to be attained by government alone.” Hmm… What successes are you specifically speaking of?
And I have to question if he really wants the math program to be that effective, because these students could grow up to be economists and mathematicians, and then they might start looking into how he came up with his “jobs saved or created” numbers… Oh, snap!! (Instruction: When you say “Oh Snap!” in your head, please think of when Derek says it to Matilda in Zoolander.. its even funnier
)
