Mitt Romney’s Free & Strong America PAC

Here is one of the periodic emails I get from a “Mitt Romney action group”.  It specifically addresses the health care issues at hand.

Eric, PAC_summer_gear

Health care costs are spiraling out of control, and tens of millions of Americans can’t afford health insurance. President Obama and the Democrats believe the solution to these problems is a new government insurance program that will compete with the private sector. This is a course that threatens free markets. It is wrong for America.

Reform of our health care system can be accomplished by strengthening the private insurance system, as we did in Massachusetts when I was Governor. Strip away burdensome regulations to get the cost of insurance policies down. Take some of the taxpayer money we’re now spending on free care and use it to help buy insurance for the needy.

But the last thing Congress and the President should do is create another big government program. The most important lesson from the Massachusetts health care reform is that you don’t need a new “public option” to get insurance to more people.

Eric, will you join me in fighting for sensible health care reform and against President Obama’s plans for a new government insurance program? Your most generous contribution to my Free and Strong America PAC will give us the resources we need to make our voice heard on this and other critical issues facing our nation.

We have a lot of work to do over the coming year, and I hope I’ll have you standing by my side. But with it being summertime, I hope you don’t forget to take some time to have some fun too. To help, as a special thank you for your continued support, we’re happy to offer the following official PAC summer gear:

Thank you again for your continued support and dedication.

Best,

Mitt Romney

For me:

  1. It seems to contradict itself in taking credit for the Massachusetts health care plan, and then criticizing it.   During the primaries I can remember it was touted as being the “ultimate solution” but all I’ve heard since is that it is rapidly becoming insolvent as its costs are 33% higher than the nation’s average.  The state’s treasurer, a Democrat, has said that the health plan may prove unsustainable.  “It’s a warning for the federal government as it looks to do something similar,” he said. “I’m not saying we can’t afford any of it, but it certainly doesn’t appear that we can afford all of it.” (WSJ)
  2. I don’t understand what it means to “ Take some of the taxpayer money we’re now spending on free care and use it to help buy insurance for the needy.”  I think he is saying that payments currently being made to hospitals could be used to pay for insurance for the needy??
  3. Is holding out Massachusetts as an example of efficient health care, the same as Obama using California as an example of energy efficiency?  :)

What do you think?

I thought the exact same thing when I read “Take some of the taxpayer money we’re now spending on free care and use it to help buy insurance for the needy.” Aren’t you essentially doing the same thing? Whether the government subsidizes hospital bills or insurance bills, it’s still welfare.
