Is the BCS done?

Oh, the BCS.

I’m torn. I am sooo sick of congressional hearings to investigate steroids, or Mark McGwire, or Roger Clemens, the Mitchell Report, or anything with sports!  And then we need hearings to see if anyone perjured themselves in the first hearings.  When Senator Specter said he wanted to open an investigation into steroids in the NFL last December, I wanted to puke.  I seriously believe this is an excuse to spend taxpayer dollars so they can watch football or get autographs.

On the other hand, I hate the BCS and the only organization that seems to have any sway over it is the government… who holds the key to its tax-exempt status (what? I thought they clear over $300M a year?) and can set laws regulating “inter-state business.”  When the networks renewed their contracts with the BCS last year, I knew that no change was coming.

Well on Friday, May 1, 2009, the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection held hearings to see if the BCS model needs to be tweaked.   Representative Joe Barton of Texas indicated that the system needs to be revamped or the BCS would face legislation doing it for them.

President Obama has also made several comments in support of a playoff.  In a 60 minutes interview he said, “I think any sensible person would say that if you’ve got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season and many of them have one loss or two losses, there’s no clear decisive winner; we should be creating a playoff system.”  In a ESPN interview he said, “I’m fed up with these computer rankings and this, that and the other. Get eight teams — the top eight teams right at the end. You got a playoff. Decide on a national champion.”

Oh, I can only hope… I mean isn’t a system good enough for all other major sports, good enough for football?
