Benedict Arlen

Yesterday, six-term Senator Arlen Specter (R) Pennsylvania, defected from the Republican party to join the surging ranks of the Dems on Capitol Hill.  His switch, along with the now almost certain confirmation of Al Franken in Minnesota, assures the Dems of a filibuster-proof 60 votes in passing anything they want.  With significant majorities in the House, Senate, and the Presidency, there is no stopping the President’s agenda without a significant turn in public approval ratings.  With ratings above 60%, Mr. Obama is all grins.  We can now most certainly all look forward to cap and trade, universal health care, ever higher deficits, and soon runaway inflation.

Why did Senator Specter change parties?  He said it was because he realized more of his philosophy aligned with the Democrats than with the Republicans.  In reality, it’s because he is up for re-election in 2010 and is 21 points behind in the Republican primary.  Ever since he was the final vote for the $787 billion “stimulus bill”, Republican’s have not supported him.  One might ask, is he being true to his principals that for 30 years have made him a republican by switching, or is he being true to his desire to remain in office?

    Dirtbag.

That really bothers me a lot. He was nominated by Pennsylvania under the assumption that he would represent the Republicans that voted him into office. I didn’t even know it was possible to officially change parties mid-term. I’ve never been impressed by his “bi-partisanship”; now I’m disgusted by him.

I hope that a democrat still decides to run against him and that he loses, because of what you said, Eric. He was elected as a Republican. He essentially just forced all those Pennsylvanian voters to vote democrat in the last election.
